Claude Code, Claude Cowork & ChatGPT for Business Teams

Claude Code vs Claude Cowork vs ChatGPT/OpenAI Agents: team matrix, GPT-5.6/GPT-6 class APIs, MCP OAuth, and approval gates

19 septembre 2026Technology4 min read

Workstation guide to Claude Code, Claude Cowork, and ChatGPT / OpenAI Agents for business teams — what each product is for, which teams should own it, and how to run them with governance. Companion: business summary · Products: /products#coding-agents · Related: Claude Opus 5 on AWS.

Claude Code, Claude Cowork, and ChatGPT for business teams

Agent digest.
  • Claude Code: Anthropic agentic coding product for repo-scale engineering work.
  • Claude Cowork: Anthropic product for scheduled business tasks — decks, docs, spreadsheets; desk-to-phone check-in (claude.com/product/cowork).
  • ChatGPT / Agents: Team & Enterprise chat surfaces plus Agents SDK / Agents API; current API lineup includes GPT-5.6- and GPT-6-class models.
  • Rule: map product → team → tools → approval policy; never share one unbounded agent identity across finance and production infra.

1. Why dedicated page content for coding and business agents

Hardware and frameworks are necessary. Day-to-day adoption still happens inside coding agents and team copilots. This brief maps Anthropic and OpenAI surfaces to Workstation’s products hub so buyers can see a coherent stack: labs → frameworks → human-facing agents.

2. Claude Code — engineering and platform teams

Claude Code is Anthropic’s agentic coding product (public product and docs surfaces). It is aimed at repository-scale work: multi-file edits, tests, and long-running coding agents in terminal or IDE workflows.

Good fit: platform engineering, SRE automation of runbooks-as-code, product squads modernising monoliths, FDE-style delivery cells.

Workstation practice: keep Claude Code behind SSO; scope MCP tools per repo; require human review on infra-mutating tools; promote agent-assisted changes through the same ADR / PR / Ring Promoter path as human commits. See also our wise-developer workflow articles.

3. Claude Cowork — ops, PMO, and knowledge work

Claude Cowork is a distinct Anthropic product page (claude.com/product/cowork). Public positioning describes starting a task at the desk, checking in from a phone, connecting data, scheduling daily/weekly/monthly work, and delivering polished decks, documents, or spreadsheets for review. Some Anthropic UI copy also frames Cowork as folding into the broader Claude experience — treat the product page as the source of capability claims.

Good fit: operations, PMO, customer success ops, finance FP&A packs, marketing research briefs — teams that need recurring artefacts more than git diffs.

Workstation practice: connect only approved data sources; schedule tasks with an owner; require human sign-off before external send; log outputs for audit where regulated.

4. ChatGPT and OpenAI Agents — GTM, support, and builders

OpenAI’s ChatGPT Team / Enterprise surfaces remain the fastest path for broad knowledge-work adoption. For custom agents, OpenAI documents an Agents SDK / Agents API / Responses API path so builders choose the right control surface.

Public model docs (September 2026 research) list current classes including GPT-5.6-family and GPT-6-family APIs alongside realtime and multimodal variants. Exact IDs and rate limits change — pin versions in code and re-verify on platform.openai.com before production freezes.

Good fit: support macros, sales research, content ops, and product teams building tool-using agents on OpenAI’s stack.

5. Team mapping matrix

Team Primary surface Typical outputs Must-have controls
Engineering / platformClaude Code (+ Cursor where used)PRs, tests, refactorsRepo scopes, Review Bot, ring promote
Ops / PMO / CS opsClaude CoworkDecks, trackers, weekly packsData connectors allow-list, human review
Support / GTMChatGPT Team/EnterpriseMacros, research, draftsWorkspace DLP, retention, admin roles
Product buildersOpenAI Agents SDK / Claude PlatformCustom agents in appsMCP OAuth, Vault leases, eval gates
Finance / legalCowork or Enterprise chat (narrow tools)Analysis packs, clause reviewNo write access to money-moving systems without dual control

6. Governance shared across vendors

  1. One agent identity ≠ all company data. Split by team and environment.
  2. Prefer MCP OAuth and short-lived Vault leases over pasteable API keys (security brief).
  3. Put high-risk tools behind human approval; log every invocation.
  4. Evaluate prompts and tools like software — promote through rings.
  5. Edge-front agent HTTP with WSL Proxy when traffic leaves the laptop.

7. Closing

Claude Code ships code; Claude Cowork ships business artefacts; ChatGPT / OpenAI Agents cover broad team adoption and custom builders. Workstation helps you map, secure, and operate that mix — start at Products → Coding & business agents.
